Māngere Local Economic Development Working Group is proud to present the 2020 Mangere Business Series. This series of business knowledge sharing events offers an interactive learning and development opportunity to help you to get your business idea either off the ground, or as successful as you know it can be!

Every 6 weeks we’ll be hold an evening event where local residents can meet-up and learn about running a business and share their knowledge with each other. For each event we invite guest speakers, ranging from local business owners to creative entrepreneurs. Our speakers will provide insights and learnings on a variety of useful topics.The purpose of our Māngere Business Series is to help you support your own business and creative endeavours. Whether this be getting a idea off the ground, building financial sustainability into your existing business, or finding others to collaborate with and be inspired by. Our events will be informal and relaxed, with food and drinks, so that you can enjoy it and make the most of this opportunity together.

The task of marketing and promoting your own business or creative skills is vitally important. But with all the competition out there and the huge range of marketing and advertising options available to you, this task can be challenging! So come join us for a conversation around MARKETING & PROMOTION, with guest speaker Ruta Ioane offering advice, insights and learnings from their own business expereince.

Co-owner of Milan Motors Limited along with Partner Tenari Vai. Ruta and Tenari have been in the automotive repair business since 2013. They have created their own website, business cards, manage the google reviews and all marketing related materials for the business.

In this session Ruta will cover her thought process and what she as a business decided to do, as well as challenges.

“In the beginning we could have invested in email marketing, a content management system, marketing automation software, online paid advertising to gain exposure for our business but its vitally important to take a step back and understand the goals of your business before looking to do that and also who your customers are. Getting online is important but not complicated nor should you pay too much for it. Keeping it simple is key and do it yourself as a small business to start off with is even better.”

Topic: SHARING THE JOURNEY  - The first year in business

It takes a huge leap of faith to open up your own business.  The confidence to make the move and then to back yourself.  The first year in business has some practical challenges in setting up, from registering to ongoing compliance IRD/Payroll/GST – cashflow management, getting clients and employing staff.  All of which could be seen as the trials and tribulations! So come join us for a conversation around the ‘first year in business’, with guest speakers offering advice, insights and learnings from their own journey.

Local accontant Ruth Sio-Lokam will chat about making the leap of faith from working in a long established accounting practice for 14 years to breaking off into opening her own business.  Ruth will also be offering a Q&A session around accouting and the practical challenges of opening up a business. Qiane Matata-Sipu is a social entrepreneur. Working for 12 years as a journalist, photographer and communication specialist, she shares her story of leaving a secure, financially stable job (more than once) and taking the leap into business. Topic: Tax essentials for small business

When you're self-employed, a contractor or running a small business, a basic understanding of key tax types and your IRD obligations will make your life much easier. This session is suited for people new to business or thinking of starting a business. Come along and learn about:

  • Business structures and their different rules, tax rates and obligations

  • Individual tax return requirements

  • GST returns

  • Helpful IRD resources on tax compliance for small businesses

  • Record keeping principles and tips on working with IRD

Pita Pirihi - speaking on his own company PATU MEDIA - A Māori inspired, Māori owned, Kaupapa driven media agency which specializes in creating brand awareness for businesses.
