Tōia Talks / Monday, 8 October, Otahuhu Library
An exciting lecture series called Tōia Talks was launched at Ōtāhuhu Pātaka Kōrero Ōtāhuhu Library in September 2016. The series is aimed at ‘Convening community leaders, social activators, and change-makers to share stories and offer better solutions for a better world.’
The inaugural Tōia Talks lecture featured filmmaker, Paul Janman and historian, Scott Hamilton who discussed their feature documentary, ‘Fragments of the Great South Road’ and screen footage from the film. Janman and Hamilton walked the two hundred kilometre road talking with locals, historians, and artists about living along this historic road. The Great South Road was built to bring a British army into the Māori Waikato Kingdom. It runs from the edge of King Country at the Puniu River up the Great South Road to Newmarket in central Auckland.

Ross will tell the story of the Auckland freezing works from a union perspective. "In describing the history of unionism at the freezing works, from the early twentieth century until the closures of the factories in the 1980s, this talk underscores the prominent place that the freezing works occupied in Auckland/ Tāmaki Makaurau, in the New Zealand economy, and in the trade union movement." Tell your whanau and bring them along!
